John Cena seemingly rules out breaking long-standing WWE record

John Cena doesn’t think he’s going to win another World Championship in WWE.

Cena has won 16 World titles in WWE, the joint-highest of any Superstar to have worked for the wrestling giant.

He currently holds for record with Ric Flair, who also has 16 World title reigns to his name, and many fans have speculated that Cena could overtake him before he eventually hangs up his boots.

However, speaking at ComicCon in Cardiff over the weekend, Cena explained that he really doesn’t think he’s going to win the Undisputed WWE Universal title anytime soon (via WrestleTalk).

“I’m not done in the ring. I am realistic with where I’m at in my life. I’m 45, and I can tell you from being a 16-time champion, it is very tough to win. I’m not certain that that’s in the cards. We’ll see. Stories yet to be told because if I’m in the ring, I got a chance. I am just saying I’ve been there, so kudos to the young guys doing it.

So while Cena has re-emphasized that he hasn’t retired from wrestling, he seems realistic in his understanding that his schedule simply wouldn’t allow for a prolonged World title reign.

Despite that, WWE has shown a willingness to put a World title onto a part-time performer over the last couple of years, as we’ve seen with Goldberg and Brock Lesnar.

So, if the story is there, Cena’s busy Hollywood schedule like wouldn’t be a complete dealbreaker when it comes to a potential record-breaking World title win.

In what will come as a disappointing update to fans, Cena revealed during the same Comic-Con panel that he won’t be appearing at Clash at the Castle next month, as some expected him to.

However, again during that panel appearance, Cena explained that he isn’t retiring anytime soon, which will definitely some as good news for fans of the 45-year-old.

A return for John does seem likely for Spring 2023, in time for WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles. At the show, which is also slated to feature The Rock, Cena is expected to go one-on-one with Theory.

As noted, the show is also expected to feature The Rock, with a recent report claiming that WWE is still “100%” planning on having Dwayne Johnson face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39.
